Dual Media Filters
Advanced filtration using layered media (e.g. anthracite + sand) for efficient turbidity and solids removal.

Overview
Cube Consolidating Dual Media Filters are broadly used for removing suspended solids, turbidity, organic particulate, and colour from process liquids. Employing layered granular media—typically a coarse-grained anthracite layer above finer sand—these filters deliver reliable filtration and protect downstream processes such as reverse osmosis, activated carbon, or biological treatment.
Technical Highlights
- Typical media bed depth: 0.6–1.6 m (total) with anthracite on top, sand underneath
- Flow rates: 5–20 m/h (~3–8 gpm/ft²) in gravity filtration; pressurised systems allow higher flux rates.
- Particle removal: achieves turbidity and TSS reduction consistently under 10–20 µm
- Backwash trigger: pressure differential around 10 psi (~0.7 bar) typically initiates cleaning.
How Dual Media Filters Work
Raw water enters through a distribution header for even flow across the media bed. Water passes first through anthracite, trapping larger flocs, then through the fine sand layer which captures smaller particles via straining, diffusion, and adhesion. At the base, a gravel or underdrain system collects the filtered water and prevents media loss. Periodic backwash reverses flow direction to clean and re-stratify the media layers, extending filter run times.
Multi-layer designs (e.g. anthracite–sand–garnet) offer enhanced efficiency, yet dual media (two layers) strikes a practical balance for many industrial applications.
Key Benefits
- Greater Filtration Efficiency: Removes particles down to 10–25 microns, outperforming single-media sand filters.
- Extended Filter Run Time: Coarse anthracite layer reduces clogging, meaning fewer backwash cycles and reduced downtime.
- Lower Pressure Drop: Optimised layering and media gradation reduce operational energy requirements.
- Versatile & Modular: Customisable media selections (e.g. GAC, garnet) for specific contaminants; gravity or pressurised vessels can be supplied.
- Simple Operation & Maintenance: Automated backwash, minimal mechanical components, and robust design lead to operational reliability.
